Why Akagera National Park Matters

Akagera is Rwanda's only savanna park, spread across the country's eastern border with Tanzania, where rolling hills, papyrus swamps, and a chain of lakes create one of the most complete ecosystems in East Africa. It's named for the Kagera River, which feeds the string of lakes along its eastern edge — Lake Ihema being the largest and most prominent. After decades of decline following the 1994 genocide, when much of the park was resettled and its wildlife decimated, Akagera has become one of Africa's standout conservation comeback stories, largely through a partnership between Rwanda Development Board and African Parks.
