Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive at Kigali International Airport and meet your driver-guide for a transfer into Kigali, followed by a relaxed city tour depending on your flight arrival time. Spend approximately 3–4 hours visiting key sights such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local markets, important city viewpoints and selected cultural areas, with lunch or coffee along the way. later proceed to your hotel for accommodation

Day 2

Kigali – Nyanza King’s Palace – Nyungwe

After an early breakfast, depart Kigali and drive south toward Nyanza, approximately 2–2.5 hours by road. Visit the King’s Palace, a reconstruction of the traditional royal residence, and allow around 1.5–2 hours to explore the palace grounds and learn about Rwanda’s former monarchy, including the traditional Inyambo cattle. Continue toward Nyungwe National Park, allowing roughly 4.5–5.5 hours of driving depending on stops and road conditions. Arrive in the Nyungwe area in the late afternoon, check in and rest ahead of the following morning’s chimpanzee trek.

Day 3

Chimpanzee Trekking and Nyungwe Canopy Walk

Chimpanzee Trekking and Nyungwe Canopy Walk
Start very early, for the drive to the chimpanzee trekking briefing point. Chimpanzee tracking generally begins early and can take anywhere from about one hour to several hours depending on where the chimpanzees are located. After returning to your lodge for breakfast and some rest, have lunch before heading back into the forest for the canopy walk. Allow approximately 2–3 hours for the canopy experience, including the forest hike to the walkway; the suspension walkway rises roughly 70 metres above the forest floor and provides views across the rainforest.

Day 4

Nyungwe – Kigali – Musanze and Iby'Iwacu Cultural Experience

After breakfast, begin the long drive north toward Kigali, allowing approximately 5.5–6.5 hours of road travel, followed by another roughly 2.5–3 hours toward Musanze, depending on traffic and stops. Rather than trying to fit in another major activity during the drive, arrive in the Volcanoes National Park area in the late afternoon and visit the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Centre, where you can experience traditional Rwandan culture, dance, music, crafts and community-based tourism. Finish the day at your lodge in Musanze or near the park and prepare for the following morning’s golden monkey trek.

Day 5

Golden Monkey Trek and Dian Fossey Visit

Begin with an early breakfast and drive a short distance to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for the golden monkey trekking briefing. The trek normally takes place in the morning and involves hiking through the bamboo and montane forest in search of the endangered golden monkeys. Return to your lodge around midday for lunch and relaxation, then visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's Ellen Campus in the afternoon, allowing approximately 2–3 hours to learn about Dian Fossey’s research and the continuing conservation work surrounding mountain gorillas.

Day 6

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Have an early breakfast before driving to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for the gorilla trekking briefing, usually followed by a short transfer to the trailhead. The trek can take approximately 1.5 hours to several hours depending on the location of the assigned gorilla family and terrain, with a maximum of one hour spent observing the gorillas once they are found. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch, a shower and a well-earned afternoon of relaxation. This should remain a dedicated gorilla day rather than combining it with another major excursion.

Day 7

Volcanoes National Park – Kigali

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast in Musanze before beginning the approximately 2.5–3-hour drive back to Kigali. This day acts as a buffer after the physically demanding gorilla trek and avoids rushing straight from the mountains into another major activity. Once in Kigali, check into your hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure, with the option of enjoying a final Rwandan meal, visiting a craft market or simply relaxing at the hotel.

Day 8

Kigali Leisure and Cultural Day

Keep this as a flexible final full day in Rwanda. After breakfast, enjoy a slower morning in Kigali with time for shopping, cafés, galleries or revisiting a city attraction that could not be covered on Day 1. A leisurely day is particularly practical because the previous days involve several early starts and demanding forest treks. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner featuring Rwandan cuisine and prepare for your departure the following day

Day 9

Departure

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and keep the morning free according to your flight time. Allow approximately 30–60 minutes for the transfer to Kigali International Airport, with extra time recommended for check-in and departure formalities. For an international flight, it is practical to leave the hotel around 3 hours before departure, particularly if you have luggage to check
