Tarangire National Park

Why Tarangire National Park Matters

Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania's most distinctive safari destinations, famous for its enormous elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and beautiful savannah landscapes. Located south of Arusha, the park is centred around the Tarangire River, an important permanent water source that attracts large concentrations of wildlife, particularly during the dry season. Visitors can expect to encounter elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes and several antelope species. Tarangire is also particularly interesting for its diverse birdlife, including colourful bee-eaters, hornbills, raptors and other savannah species. Its impressive baobab-studded scenery creates a unique atmosphere that distinguishes it from the open plains of the Serengeti.

The best time to visit Tarangire is generally between June and October, when seasonal water sources dry up and wildlife gathers around the Tarangire River, creating excellent game-viewing opportunities. Activities include guided game drives, birdwatching, photography and selected walking or night safari experiences where permitted and arranged through authorised operators. Visitors should consider spending one to two nights in or around the park to enjoy a more relaxed safari experience and maximise opportunities for wildlife sightings. Tarangire is also conveniently combined with Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti as part of a northern Tanzania safari itinerary. During the wetter months, wildlife becomes more dispersed as animals move into surrounding areas, although the park remains attractive for its scenery and birdwatching
