Overview

This 8-night Uganda journey is designed to combine the country’s most iconic wildlife and primate experiences in a logical, if ambitious, north–south circuit. Starting in Kampala, the itinerary moves through Lake Mburo, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest and finally Murchison Falls, with the trip ending at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary before a late-night flight from Entebbe on the 15th. The highlights are mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, classic savannah game drives, the Kazinga Channel, Murchison Falls and rhino tracking. Drive times are approximate and can vary considerably with road conditions, stops and traffic.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Kampala | Villa Kololo

Arrive in Uganda late in the evening and transfer to Villa Kololo for a comfortable first night. As this is a late-night arrival, the evening is intentionally kept free for check-in, a light meal and rest ahead of the safari. Transfer time from Entebbe International Airport to Kampala is generally around 45 minutes to 1½ hours, depending heavily on traffic, with no scheduled activities on arrival.

Day 2

Kampala to Lake Mburo National Park.

After breakfast, depart Kampala and begin the drive southwest to Lake Mburo National Park, approximately 4–5 hours depending on traffic and stops. A stop at the Equator is a good opportunity for photographs and a short break before continuing toward the park. After lunch and check-in, enjoy an afternoon game drive of approximately 2½–3 hours, looking for zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, warthog and other savannah wildlife. Lake Mburo is particularly attractive because it offers a more intimate safari experience, with rolling landscapes, acacia woodland and open grassland.

Day 3

Lake Mburo to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Enjoy an early breakfast before departing Lake Mburo for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This is a long but scenic transfer of approximately 6–8 hours, depending on which Bwindi sector you are staying in and road conditions, taking you through the changing landscapes of southwestern Uganda. Break the journey with lunch and occasional photographic stops before arriving at your forest lodge in the afternoon or early evening. The remainder of the day is for relaxation, an early dinner and preparation for the following day’s gorilla trek.

Day 4

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi | Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Rise early for the main highlight of the safari: mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. After breakfast, report to the trekking headquarters for registration and a ranger briefing before entering the forest. The trek itself can take anywhere from roughly 1 hour to 6+ hours depending on where the gorilla family is located and how it moves; once the family is found, the permitted viewing time is approximately 1 hour. After returning from the forest, have lunch and depart for Queen Elizabeth National Park, with the drive taking approximately 4–6 hours depending on your Bwindi sector and route. Arrive at the lodge in the evening for dinner and rest.

Day 5

Queen Elizabeth National Park |game drive and boat cruise.

Spend a full day exploring Queen Elizabeth National Park, beginning with an early morning game drive of approximately 3–4 hours when wildlife is generally most active. Explore the Kasenyi plains in search of elephants, lions, Uganda kobs, buffalo, warthogs, waterbuck and other wildlife. Return to the lodge for breakfast or lunch and some relaxation before heading out for an afternoon boat cruise of approximately 2–3 hours on the Kazinga Channel. The cruise is one of the park’s signature experiences, offering excellent opportunities to see large numbers of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffalo and abundant birdlife along the water

Day 6

Queen Elizabeth to Kibale National Park | Chimpanzee Trekking PM.

Depart early from Queen Elizabeth National Park for Kibale Forest, allowing approximately 3–4 hours for the drive. On arrival, proceed for chimpanzee trekking, normally beginning with a briefing before entering the forest. The chimpanzee experience generally takes around 2–4 hours, depending on the location and movement of the chimpanzees, with the opportunity to encounter other primates and forest wildlife along the way. After the trek, return to the lodge for relaxation.

Day 7

Kibale to Murchison Falls National Park.

After breakfast, begin the long northbound journey from Kibale to Murchison Falls National Park. Allow approximately 6–8 hours of driving, depending on the precise lodge location, road conditions and stops. The route takes you through rural western and northern Uganda, with changing scenery from the forested landscapes around Kibale to more open countryside as you approach Murchison. Stop for lunch along the way and arrive at your lodge later in the afternoon or evening. Keep this as a relatively relaxed day, as the following morning is planned around an early safari start.

Day 8

Murchison Falls National Park | Game Drive & Nile Cruise

Start early with a 3–4-hour game drive through the northern sector of Murchison Falls National Park, one of Uganda’s premier wildlife areas. Look for elephants, Rothschild’s giraffes, lions, buffalo, Uganda kobs, hartebeest, warthogs and, with luck, leopards. Return for breakfast or lunch and some downtime before the afternoon Victoria Nile boat cruise, which typically lasts around 2½–3 hours and travels toward the base of Murchison Falls. Expect close views of hippos and crocodiles along the river, with elephants and buffalo often coming down to drink. If timing allows, finish with a visit of approximately 1 hour to the Top of Murchison Falls for spectacular views of the Nile being forced through its narrow gorge.

Day 9

Murchison Falls to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary | Rhino Tracking | Entebbe Airport

After an early breakfast, depart Murchison Falls for Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, allowing approximately 4–5 hours of driving depending on the park exit and road conditions. At Ziwa, enjoy a guided rhino-tracking experience on foot, normally lasting around 1½–2½ hours, accompanied by trained guides/rangers while searching for the sanctuary’s southern white rhinos. After the activity, have lunch and continue directly toward Entebbe International Airport, allowing approximately 3–4 hours for the drive. Because your international flight is late at night, the timing should leave a sensible buffer for the airport, while still allowing you to finish the safari with one final memorable wildlife experience. Ziwa is also particularly well positioned for this final day because it lies on the route between Murchison and Entebbe
