Your safari begins with an early morning departure from Arusha, typically around 7:00 AM, for the approximately 2.5 to 3-hour drive to Tarangire National Park. The journey takes you through the countryside and small communities surrounding Arusha before reaching the park, famous for its large elephant populations, ancient baobab trees and seasonal wildlife concentrations around the Tarangire River. After entering the park, you will begin a game drive lasting approximately 3 hours, exploring the open grasslands, wooded areas and riverine landscapes in search of elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, impalas, warthogs, lions and other wildlife. Around midday, you will stop for lunch, allowing approximately 1 hour to relax and enjoy your meal, usually at a designated picnic area with views of the surrounding landscape. After lunch, continue with another approximately 2 to 3-hour game drive, exploring different sections of the park and looking for additional wildlife while enjoying Tarangire's distinctive scenery and birdlife. In the late afternoon, around 4:00 or 4:30 PM, leave the park and drive approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to your accommodation in Mto wa Mbu. You will arrive in the early evening, giving you time to check in, freshen up and relax after your first day on safari.
After breakfast, depart from Mto wa Mbu at approximately 6:30 or 7:00 AM for the roughly 1 to 1.5-hour drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Upon arrival, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for an extended game drive of approximately 4 to 5 hours. The crater's enclosed ecosystem provides excellent opportunities to see a remarkable concentration of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and, with some luck, the endangered black rhinoceros. As you explore the crater floor, your guide will also point out the different habitats, including grasslands, woodland, wetlands and the crater's lakes, which support a wide variety of birdlife. Around midday, stop for approximately 1 hour for a picnic lunch, usually in a designated area before continuing your exploration. After lunch, enjoy another approximately 1.5 to 2-hour game drive through the crater, giving you additional opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography
After breakfast, depart from Mto wa Mbu at approximately 7:00 AM for the short drive of about 15 to 30 minutes to Lake Manyara National Park. Begin a morning game drive lasting approximately 3 hours, exploring the park's diverse habitats, from groundwater forests and open grasslands to wetlands and the shores of Lake Manyara. The park is known for its elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippos, monkeys and abundant birdlife, while lions may sometimes be spotted resting in trees. Depending on the season and water levels, the lake can also attract large numbers of flamingos and other waterbirds. Around midday, stop for approximately 1 hour for lunch and a short rest before continuing with another approximately 2-hour game drive. The afternoon drive provides a final opportunity to explore the park and observe wildlife at a more relaxed pace before exiting the park in the late afternoon.
From Lake Manyara, begin the drive back to Arusha, which takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic and your final destination in the city. You should arrive in Arusha around 5:00 to 6:00 PM, marking the end of your 3-day northern Tanzania safari.
